First Day of School

August 15 was the first day of school for the kids, at Madras College.  The family is therefore getting into a bit more of a normal routine, with the kids at school and Mom and Dad both working during the day.

The kids would be in 6th, 7th, and 9th grades at home, which translates to S1, S2, and S4 in the Scottish system.  (S stands for secondary, P for primary.)  S1 through S3 (including Mary Ella and Jesse) are at the Kilrymont campus on the south side of town and S4 through S6 (including Addy) are at the South Street campus downtown.

Although we have homeschooled in the past, we wanted to make sure the kids got a full cultural immersion experience, so we chose the public school.

It’s been a bit challenging for people to make friends in just the first few days, while still learning the school system itself.  Jesse and Mary Ella have hung out together at lunch and “interval” (mini morning break time).

So far, one of the most interesting parts is the uniforms, the photos of which fill the rest of this post.

You all look ready to audition for the next Harry Potter movie. If you kids learn to tie a real knot in a tie that cultural experience will serve you well.

The Simple Knot (Oriental Knot) Tying Instructions
Start with the backside of the tie facing away from you, the wide end is on the right and the small end is on the left. …
Wide end under the small end to the left.
Across the small end to the right.
Up into the neck loop from underneath.
